Norala, South Cotabato – The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Norala, headed by Mayor Clemente B. Fedoc, together with Vice Mayor Victor Y. Balayon, Sangguniang Bayan (SB) members, and the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources led by Hon. Gary Penuela Sioquim, joined hands with the Department of Education (DepEd), Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Simsiman under Hon. Abet Aritalla, and the Barangay Simsiman Environment Committee chaired by Hon. Saydin Cabel, to celebrate World Bamboo Day 2025 with a bamboo growing activity.

The event was conducted through the efforts of the Municipal Agriculturist’s Office, represented by Sammie Bornales Barrera, and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) Norala, led by Engr. Erwin P. Somodio, MENRO Designate.

With the global theme, “Harnessing the Power of Bamboo for People and Planet,” the initiative underscored bamboo’s role in environmental sustainability, soil protection, flood prevention, and biodiversity conservation.

During the program, Hon. Gary Penuela Sioquim emphasized that bamboo’s extensive root system is one of nature’s most effective defenses against soil erosion. He also pointed out that bamboo cultivation supports ecosystems by providing habitats for various species and promoting biodiversity.

Vice Mayor Victor Y. Balayon also noted that while dikes and flood control measures remain essential, planting bamboo is a crucial complementary effort.
